The goal of this presentation is to provide an overview of energy storage technologies for smart grid applications. Some details will be provided on the fundamentals and functioning of one particular battery technology; namely lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion). Li-ion batteries are currently the most promising battery chemistry for personal electronics and electric mobility applications and are increasing in use for stationary storage (on-grid and off-grid). A specific case study will be presented to illustrate the techno-economic viability of Li-ion batteries in smart grid applications.
