Dynamic Line Rating for Smart Grid and Smart Cities

A real-time dynamic line rating system has been developed for all lines including overhead lines and underground cables, and substation equipment. The novel line rating system is designed to cooperate with smart grid to ensure greater reliability of service and optimum utilization of transmission and distribution line assets by using standard internet-based communications, smart sensors, better analytics, and real-time visualization. By providing real-time dynamic line ratings in a minute by minute basis it enables greater integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid, and optimization of traditional power generation resources than what is currently possible to provide least cost electric energy supply to all high and low voltage customers. One of the critical elements of the electric power grid are the wires and cables that are used for the transmission and distribution of electricity from generation stations including renewables to customers. Smart cities require accurate modeling of overhead lines and underground cable circuits and real-time monitoring for reliable operation. Real-time ratings are provided for all lines in the system by accurate thermal and electromagnetic modeling of the wires and by monitoring overhead and underground cable circuits during steady state conditions, dynamic and transient conditions. In smart grid dynamic line ratings of all lines in the system is required for optimal load-flow operations. The LINEAMPS system developed by Electrotech Enterprises is unique in providing real-time ratings of all lines in the electrical network based on real-time weather information from many weather stations, geo-spatial information of network elements, and real-time line currents and voltages from utility system.

Presentation will end with live demonstration of the LINEAMPS system currently used by electric power companies in several regions of the world.
