Topic:

Eye-Based Mobile Health System - more than meets the eye

The world’s ageing population and prevalence of chronic diseases are increasing healthcare costs and  social-economical burden. In response, many parties have proposed personalized telehealth and wearable health monitoring systems as cost-effective solutions for geriatric and chronic care.  The conventionally monitored physiologic signals include electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmogram (PPG), blood pressure (BP), body temperature and movement.  However, alternative measurement approaches are also being sought for better accessibility and understanding of the patients’ health.  This talk gives an overview of the development of wearable telehealth solutions, introduces pupillary dynamics for health monitoring, and proposes an eye-based mobile health system. Preliminary results show that pupillary movements contain useful physiological information which may be of prognostic value.

Biography:

Dr. Kevin Hung is Assistant Professor at the School of Science and Technology, The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK). Before joining OUHK, Dr. Hung had been Assistant Project Manager at the Joint Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Electronic Engineer at a medical device company. Dr. Hung received his B.Sc. from Queen’s University, and his M.Phil. and Ph.D. from CUHK. His research interests are biosignal processing, biosystem modelling, mobile health and wearable sensors. He is a founding officer of the IEEE-EMBS Hong Kong Chapter, and has been serving as the founding Counsellor of the IEEE OUHK Student Branch.
