The South China Sea – Its History, Issues and Implications for US Policy
The South China Sea – Its History, Issues and Implications for US Policy. The South China Sea is one of the most critical sea-lanes, a gateway between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Over half of the world’s commerce, valued at 5.3 trillion dollars including 1.2 trillion dollars of US commerce transits this chokepoint every year. Recently, the region has become the focal point of strategic regional competition between the United States and China due to the uncertainty of China’s ultimate regional intentions, its challenging of globally accepted norms like freedom of navigation, and the United States’ extensive regional economic and security commitments
Mr. Mario LaMarche
