Presentation: Zone Selective Interlocking (ZSI) has existed for more than 40 years, yet many professionals in the electrical industry have little knowledge about what it is and how it works.
ZSI is a network of two or more interconnected circuit breakers that communicate with each other so that a short circuit or ground fault will be cleared by the breaker closest to the fault in the minimum time possible. The primary goal of ZSI is to switch off the fault current within the shortest possible time with full selectivity, regardless of the fault location in an electrical distribution system.
ZSI provides the complete range of selectivity with an extremely short delay time typically of 50ms regardless of the number of fault zones and the location of the short circuit or ground fault in the power distribution system. The benefits of ZSI become more apparent with the higher number of fault zones typically found in large systems. By shortening the time to clear the fault, ZSI significantly reduces stress and damage in the event of a short circuit.

Biography:
James Alvers has been a Business Development Manager at Siemens in Northern California since June of 2018. He assists the electrical consultant community solve electrical distribution application challenges.
Previously James worked as a Data Center Electrical Engineer at Hewlett Packard/EYP Mission Critical Facilities. He has worked on electrical infrastructure design, specification and proposals as well as the startup of HP’s innovative Micro Data Center. In addition, he has worked with data center engineers to implement workshops focused on Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) and has helped HP clients with proof of concept and selection of DCIM solutions. In 2014 he presented “DCIM Evaluation and Selection for Converged IT & Facility Infrastructure” at the Uptime conference in Santa Clara.
James received an Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Degree from University of California at Berkeley, where he was awarded a GM scholarship. As an active member of Santa Clara Valley IEEE, James has held the position of Vice Chairman for IAS/PES.
