Come join the Life Members Affinity Group for Lunch!

Mark your calendars for our next Life Members Affinity Group Luncheon. This time our speaker will be Dr. Haluk Ogmen, Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Denver. Dr. Ogmen will be describing his recent research work on "Reverse-engineering the Brain: The Best Pathway to Artificial Intelligence?"
We would also like to spend some time during the meeting discussing the kinds of future events that the Life Member community would be interested in, as well as possible speakers/activities for future quarterly meetings. So bring your ideas!

Topic:

Reverse-engineering the Brain: The Best Pathway to Artificial Intelligence?

Machines already outperform humans in many domains. However, a variety of tasks, such as perception, sensorimotor control, and cognition, remain beyond the reach of our current technology. In recent years, due to significant progress in computer and sensor technologies and the resulting explosion of data, Artificial Intelligence (AI) regained momentum and is poised to be one of the most promising technologies of the 21st century. In this talk, we will review a variety of approaches to AI  and discuss whether reverse-engineering the brain constitutes the best pathway to develop systems that exhibit human-like intelligence.

Biography:

Haluk Ogmen received his B.Sc.A. and Ph.D. degrees, both in electrical engineering, from Laval University in Quebec, Canada. After graduation, he joined the University of Houston where he was a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He also served as the Chair of the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, Interim Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Department, and the Executive Director of the Center for Neuro-Engineering & Cognitive Science.  He was a visiting scientist at the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Fransisco and at the University of Bremen in Germany. In 2016 he joined the University of Denver as Senior Associate Dean of the Ritchie School of Engineering & Computer Science and as Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. His research is focused on reverse-engineering the brain. In particular, he is studying human visual perception, attention, and memory. URL: http://portfolio.du.edu/hogmen
