IEEE Cincinnati Feb 28 Section Meeting

Hardware Situational Awareness – Identifying the Onset of Failure in Power Electronics

Power electronics play mission critical roles in automotive, aerospace, medical, telecom and power generation/distribution/transmission applications.  A hardware failure in these areas can jeopardize safety and come with serious financial consequences.  Prognostic Health Management (PHM) Systems provide real-time situational awareness on the status of equipment along with their constituent components.  This enables owner/operators to better anticipate the onset of failures and optimize their preventative maintenance strategies.  This presentation summarizes the use of this technology in industry and discusses on-going research in the field.

Registration:

DINNER RESERVATIONS Members: $15.00. Non-members: $20.00. (Sorry we had to increase our dinner fees.) TWO WAYS TO PAY FOR DINNER (but you must register - use red and yellow REGISTER link below) 1) PayPal - Use the [Register and pay the fee now] button. 2) Check or cash at the door - Use the [Register and pay the fee at the meeting] button. Correct change appreciated. Make checks payable to "IEEE Cincinnati Section". Those desiring to use their bank's bill payer service to send a check, rather than paying at the meeting, should contact Reservations@ieeecincinnati.org for details.

Members should enter your IEEE Membership number when registering in order to qualify for the discounted meal price. Please enter only the digits. Experienced members might have to add leading zeros to properly enter their membership number. Use the Drop-down box on the Registration page to select Member or Non-member Dinner. The system will not allow you to select Member Dinner if you have entered the wrong IEEE Membership number or if you have typed anything other than the digits.

WALK-INS (those without reservations): You are welcome to attend this meeting and/or enjoy the dinner even if you did not register in advance. Walk-ins pay a higher $20 dinner fee. Raffel's determines our cost based on the number of plates used; if you choose to have dinner, please pay the fee if you eat even if you arrive late or didn't pre-register.

DINNER RESERVATION CANCELLATION POLICY An email to Reservations@ieeecincinnati.org prior to the close of reservations is required to properly cancel your reservation. Refunds for PayPal payments are complicated, and we request that you leave the funds on deposit for a future meeting.

Dr. Mark Scott of Miami University

Topic:

Hardware Situational Awareness – Identifying the Onset of Failure in Power Electronics

Dr. Mark Scott is an assistant professor at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He teaches courses on Electronics, Power Electronics, and Electric Vehicles.  His research team evaluates the design trade-offs associated with using silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) power devices in electrified transportation and renewable energy applications. The emphasis of their work is on the conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) and prognostic health management (PHM) techniques for power conversion hardware. Additionally, they explore the benefits of using wide bandgap devices in isolated DC/DC converters.
