IEEE EMC Society Chicago Chapter Meeting Tuesday April 16, 2019
The Chicago Chapter IEEE EMC Society invites you to an evening filled with readily applicable education and professional enrichment .
Topic: How Resonant Structures Affect Power Distribution Networks and Create Emissions
Abstract: Many Engineers hold the paradigm that adding bypass capacitors everywhere is the “Go-to” solution for all EMC and Power Integrity problems. But mindlessly doing that often adds to troubles. The reason you might ask ? Every added capacitor creates new resonance structures, moving the original issue to a new frequency without resolving it and thus creating new failures. In reality you burn a lot of time and effort playing a game of Capacitor Whack-a-Mole.
Capacitors can also hide in plain sight and cause mischief. This presentation will feature practical example case studies : A well-intentioned capacitor that caused a truck switch matrix to fail radiated susceptibly testing . Why a current mode power supply failed radiated emission at 400 MHz. A hint : the solution is the presenter's EMC Golden Rule number 7.
Thus, Capacitors, used in great profusion & placed will-nilly , are often not the component of choice to resolve EMC and Power Integrity issues. Come join us and learn why and how to intelligently use bypass capacitors.
