Cedar Rapids IEEE was founded 75 years ago!  We will recognize IEEE, the Cedar Rapids Section and the 420,000 professional IEEE members around the world today, plus those of the many previous decades.
  • Cedar Rapids IEEE was chartered in 1944, 75 years ago as a section in the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE).   IRE was founded in 1912.
  • A second predecessor organization was the older but smaller American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE), leading many other areas of electrical engineering since 1884.
  • Distinguished founders of the 2 organizations include Alfred Norton Goldsmith, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Elihu Thomson, Edwin J. Houston, Edward Weston, and more...
  • IEEE was created January 1 1963 by merging IRE with AIEE.

We will be touring the History Center and if avaiable the Grant Wood Studio at the History Center between 6 and 7 pm.  Doors open at 5:45 pm.

Topic:

75th Anniversary Keynote Address

The Cedar Rapids Section of the IEEE has a legacy evolved over the 75 years of its existence, much through the influence on one man, Arthur A. Collins and his organization, the Collins Radio Company. Arthur Collins received significant input from the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE), predecessor to IEEE.

The connection of the IRE, and the IEEE, with Arthur Collins is described and several short stories explain how this influence resulted in developments that have benefited all mankind.

The section continues today to provide information and guidance to member practitioners.
