This talk introduces the fundamentals in the modelling and inverse design of photonic devices using artificial neural networks. A highly detailed overview is given, supplemented with examples of multiple device models trained in Matlab and TensorFlow.

Dusan Gostimirovic is a Ph.D. candidate in electrical and computer engineering at Carleton University, with a thesis focused on silicon nanophotonics. His research interests include the design and fabrication of silicon-photonic devices for optical communication and computing.
