Abstract:  In big data and cloud computing era, because of data and computing requirement explosive,  traditional computer architecture are facing more challenges. In current  computer, the interconnect between processing chips is based on copper technology.  This raise power, crosstalk, and distance problems, and also constraint the design of computer architecture. Optic technology is a very good candidate in this field. It has advantage such as power,  distance, bandwidth over electric technology. In this talk, I will give some analysis to current problems that exist in computer architecture, and introduce some new computer architectures we proposed, and discuss the essential components needed in building a computer which is based on chip-level optical interconnect.

Biography:

Professor Haoqinfen got his PhD from the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. After his graduation from ICT, he helped China computer vendor Lenovo to set up its High performance computer department, and then finish two milestone high performance computers which achieved good rank number in TOP500 list, in Lenovo. He joined Beihang university in 2006, as a associate professor of computing architecture. He then spent many years to develop a 32-way high-end server, in which the most important job is to develop a chip to implement the cache coherence protocol between CPU. It is now a business upto $100 million. He then joined HiSilicon Semiconductor to continue development and research work regarding CPU. In 2018, he came back to the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese academy of science, and became a professor in high-throughput computing research center. His research interest is on novel computer architecture, Optical interconnect etc.
