Topic:

15 Years of Dark-sky Preserves in Canada

The Royal Astronomical Society's Dark-sky Preserve program strives to preserve the darkness of the night sky in parks and natural areas for the benefit of plants, animals and human users.  We do this by signing park management agreements to use shielded lighting of appropriate colour and brightness that meets international standards for conservation.  We also preserve undeveloped areas to maintain their pristine darkness.  Through our efforts, Canada has 26 Dark-sky Preserves, with 3 of these in Saskatchewan.  This talk will describe the success of the preserves and the continued threats to them due to the proliferation of light pollution from many unregulated sources.

Biography:

Richard is a researching amateur astronomer and environmentalist. Although he’d rather be studying stars, he has instead been addressing light pollution concerns in Saskatchewan over the last decade as the chair of the Saskatchewan Light Pollution Abatement Committee. His work in light pollution abatement prompted the Saskatchewan Eco-Network to name Richard a Saskatchewan Environmental Champion and awarded him the Environmental Activist Individual Award in 2007.

He has been instrumental in the designation of the Cypress Hills Inter-provincial Park as a Dark-Sky Preserve in 2004 and the Beaver Hills Dark-sky Preserve at Elk Island, Alberta in 2006. In 2009, Grasslands National Park was designated as a Dark-sky Preserve, and on the same day, endangered nocturnal Black-footed Ferrets were reintroduced into the park.

At about the same time, Richard successfully lobbied Saskatoon City Council to adopt a Dark-Sky Policy, which has been including in the City’s green-house-gas reduction plan.

He continues to advise various levels of government and organizations on light pollution abatement to reduce light trespass, energy waste, and environmental degradation. For this work, and for research and public education in astronomy, the International Astronomical Union named an asteroid after him. It is called “4143 Huziak”.

Richard lives in Saskatoon and works as a Manufacturing Engineering Technologist as his regular day job.
