PK Sen Senior Design Award - Participant Presentations

 University of Colorado

Colorado State University

Come and support our students by providing professional engineering questions, advice and a critique of their senior design project abstracts. We look forward to seeing you there!

CU: “Skytanic”

There exists no affordable alternatives to piston internal combustion engines in the experimental amateur built light aircraft category. There are a handful of off-the-shelf components which are aimed at automotive enthusiasts for electric vehicle conversions, but none meet the requirements for use in aircraft. Either way they are too heavy, or lack the safety and redundancy needed for aviation use.

The FEV-60 is an electric propulsion system for aircraft under 1500 lbs. The system provides an alternative to combustion engines for recreational planes that is optimized for aviation requirements. It consists of a motor driver, central control, and battery systems that are fully redundant.

CSU: “Solar Grid Integration”

The project is to determine the impact of solar photovoltaics at the distribution grid level. To begin addressing this question, the team has begun building a network of solar irradiance sensors and power-inverter monitors to collect data in real-time. Data will be ingested into a centralized backend for data aggregation and real-time analysis. Using OpenDSS, the team will simulate and model collected data to determine the impact on electric feeders.
