The IEEE NSW Section Robotics and Automation Society Chapter will have its first distinguished lecture and workshop on the 30th of January 2020. IEEE DL, Dr Tomomichi Sugihara from Preferred Nertorks, Inc., Japan and Mr Tom Leofler, CEO, Hullbot, Australia will join us and talk about the following topics.

Dr Tomomichi Sugihara:
Behaviour System Design Towards a Versatile Humanoid Robot
(Dr Tomomichi Sugihara will talk about dynamics and behaviour synthesis of humanoid robots, control architecture, concept and case studies of dynamics morphing, and successive information processing for biped locomotion.)

Biography: Tomomichi Sugihara is a researcher of Preferred Networks, Inc., a start-up company of informatics. Before joining the company, he made his academic career in many national universities in Japan. He received his PhD from the University of Tokyo in 2004. He was an academic research assistant from 2004 to 2005 at the University of Tokyo and became a research associate. He worked at Kyushu University as a guest associate professor from 2007 to 2010, and at Osaka University as an associate professor from 2010 to 2019. His research interests include kinematics and dynamics computation, motion planning, control, hardware design, and software development of anthropomorphic robots. He also studies human motor control based on robotic technologies.

Mr Tom Leofler:
Hullbot - An Autonomous Underwater Hull Cleaning Robot
(Hullbot is an autonomous underwater robot designed to perform regular autonomous cleaning of boat hulls to remove biofouling and maintain them in a clean state. Hullbot's mission is to revolutionise the anti-fouling industry by introducing a consumer robotics product that is smart, elegant and environmentally friendly and outperforms all other antifouling products. Their initial target market is the luxury yacht sector in Australia, followed by all yachts, boats, ships and underwater structures worldwide. Mr Tom Leofler will talk about Hullbot; it's electronics, prototyping and waterproofing of hardware, interdisciplinary tasks and teams, and other aspects of the design and production.)

Biography: Tom Loefler has an honours degree in Industrial Design from UNSW and has worked extensively in product design and manufacturing. His most recent role before Hullbot was as Senior Robot Designer for the Dutch industrial robotics company, Vertidrive, in Rotterdam. Tom has led and managed many intricate design, engineering and construction projects in areas such as boat building, medical device manufacturing, industrial design, new product development and the construction industries.
