Title: The Power of Data-Driven Intelligent Bots in Open-source Software Development

Abstract:
‘Software is eating the world’ is a famous quote by Marc Andreessen to point out that our daily lives will be inevitably and exhaustively converging with software. Interestingly, with the notable acquisitions of open source companies such as GitHub and Red Hat, and other growing excitement in the space, open-source software (OSS) has shown a crucial role in this incorporation process. To better support social interaction among OSS contributions, powerful social coding platforms including GitHub, Bitbucket, and GitLab have been proposed. These platforms offer new opportunities for OSS community engagement, but at the same time increases the workload for integrators to communicate, assign task, review code, deal with license issues, explain project guidelines, run tests, and merge pull requests. To reduce contributors’ heavy workload with repetitive tasks, OSS communities show increasing interest in adopting intelligent bots.
In this talk, I will introduce the major concepts of modern open-source software development, and present two of our recent work on building intelligent bots leveraging large-scale historical data generated during software development process. Next, I will discuss major challenges and opportunities in creating software engineering bots. In the end, I will share my experience and opinions in conducting (data-related) research as undergraduate students.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Yuan Tian (http://sophiaytian.com/) is an Assistant Professor at the School of Computing, Queen’s University. She is currently leading the Reliable and Intelligent Software Engineering (RISE) Research Lab (http://sophiaytian.com/lab.html). Dr. Tian joined Queen’s in October 2018. Prior to joining Queen’s, Dr. Tian worked at the Living Analytics Research Centre (LARC) of Singapore Management University, which is mainly funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Singapore to undertake research in data analysis, and development innovate analytic methodologies, technologies and system platforms. Her research interests lie within Software Engineering and Data Mining, with special interests in mining software repositories and automated software engineering. She currently holds an NSERC Discovery grant (2019-2024) titled “Reliable and Explainable Recommender Systems for Efficient Software Development”. Dr. Tian received her Ph.D. from Singapore Management University in 2017 with extended visits to Carnegie Mellon University and INRIA (French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control) Paris. She received her bachelor’s degree in computer science from the Chu Kochen Honors College of Zhejiang University, China.
