Amidst the hustle-bustle of college life, when it seems like you are falling behind everyone striving toward their goal with their specialization chosen and internships offered, you're seldom the only one to feel overwhelmed.
On July 28, 2023, IEEE-WIE held a virtual event for WIE day on ‘Career Development and Capacity Building’, to help students with just that. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from Engineering students, helping them determine their career path. IEEE was honoured to host the event speaker Ms. Munshareh Shafaq, a Digital Consulting Engineer Specialist at Schneider Electric. As an Electrical Engineering alumna of Jamia Millia Islamia, with experience as a research intern at University of Toronto in Blockchain, she brought a pragmatic approach to setting the right objectives. Ms. Munshareh began the session with the monotony of students following a norm when it is essential to curate themselves in a way that makes them stand out. Each person is built differently, having fortes in fields unique to some and usual to others. “What makes you different from the other candidates?” “How would one’s CV stand out from the rest?”- these were the key questions asked to ponder over and work on, especially through internships. Internships help students garner hands-on experience with the latest industrial requirements.

She continued with the importance of maintaining a good GPA throughout their undergrad years. While it isn’t necessary to score a 3.7+ GPA in each semester, being consistent with their decent grades is more significant. She also emphasized instilling exemplary communication skills, pertaining to being assertive and soft-spoken, whether they’re taking on leadership roles or working in a team. And the most effective way to hone verbal skills is to volunteer at community development, healthcare services, or education for the indigent. The event concluded with a Q/A session where Ms. Munshareh was delighted to answer all the questions from the attendees. She was generous with her time and knowledge, leaving the audience with a clear understanding of developing their career path with the right objectives and mindset.
