Topic:

MV Controllable Fuses Installed to Reduce Arc Flash on Transformer Secondary

Awareness of personnel and equipment hazards associated with arc flash events has been steadily increasing over the last several years.  The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70E), and the IEEE Guide for Performing Arc Flash Hazard Calculations (IEEE 1584) contain requirements for the evaluation of arc flash hazard boundaries and energy levels, along with equipment labeling and personal protective equipment.  Mitigation of the arc flash hazard of working on live electrical equipment can include a reduction in the available arc flash energy at that location.  Along that line, it is our pleasure to welcome Mr. Peter Walsh, PE, to present findings from his recent paper "MV Controllable Fuses Installed to Reduce Arc Flash on Transformer Secondary."

Biography:

Peter Walsh, PE is the Northeast Solutions Engineer for Mersen, formerly named Ferraz Shawmut.  A graduate of both WPI and Suffolk University, Mr. Walsh is an electrical system protection expert, having worked nearly 20 years for Mersen (Gould Shawmut / Ferraz Shawmut), and for General Electric and Cooper Industries prior to that.  He is an NFPA-certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional, a technical committee member for the aforementioned IEEE 1584 standard, an IEEE Industry Applications Society Life Member, and has been a registetred Professional Engineer for over thirty years.
