From Hubble to Webb: The Next Generation Space Telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope (sometimes called JWST or Webb), which will be launched from French Guiana in October of 2018, will be the premier observatory of the next decade. In addition to studying the first luminous glows after the Big Bang, it will be able to search for signs of life on extra-terrestrial planets similar to Earth. Webb may turn out to be the telescope that finds an answer to humanity’s most profound question: Are we alone in the Universe?

From Hubble to Webb: The Next Generation Space Telescope

Biography:

Sarbmeet Kanwal has a PhD from California Institute of Technology in Theoretical Particle Physics. After retiring from a long and successful career in Bell Labs in 2012, he has been teaching astronomy and physics at Brookdale Community College. Last spring he delivered a series of lectures titled “Probing the deepest mysteries of the universe” as part of Brookdale’s lifelong learning program for adults in the community. This fall he will be following it up with a course on “The search for extra-terrestrial life in the universe”.

Sarbmeet has a passion for encouraging kids to consider STEM as a career path. He volunteers his time for mentoring school kids with their science projects and organizing public programs at the World Science Festival in New York City. Through an organization he founded, called MOSAIC, Sarbmeet works with high school youth from different religions and faiths to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the increasing diversity in our communities. In June this year, Sarbmeet was presented with the Earl Thomas Teasley Humanitarian Award by the Monmouth County Human Relations Commission for the positive impact that MOSAIC is having on our community.
