Hubbell Power Labs Visit
The ECE students and IEEE MTTS students will be visiting the Hubbell Power Labs.
Hubbell has been building and growing since the late 1800s, adding the Ohio Brass Company and Wadsworth site to their family of companies in the 1970s. Ohio Brass itself dates back to the late 1800s, originally a brass foundry specializing in "mule jewelry" (as they called it), they saw the writing on the wall with the invention of the automobile and the electrification of the US. They begin manufacturing brass electrical contacts as well as all manner of valves and other items. They began purchasing and reselling small porcelain insulators from a company called Akron Hi-Potential, eventually acquiring all their business, and building the Ohio Brass insulator division. The Wadsworth site is the 4th iteration of the test laboratory and grew out of the support for the wet process porcelain insulator business. In the mid-1950s and through into the 1970s they began work developing surge arresters, specifically gapped designs with varistors made using silicone carbide. The arrester business grew and eventually a metal oxide varistor manufacturing operation was built at the Wadsworth site as well where it still runs 6 days a week to this day.
The lab here supports diverse Hubbell business units, specifically the arrester groups, the insulators groups, and the cable accessories groups (just to name a few). We also function as a 3rd party lab for other companies and maintain an ISO 17025 accreditation. We have HV capabilities up to 800kV 60Hz and 2.8MV impulse. We also maintain specialized polymer insulator testing capabilities and a pulsed power lab that works very closely with the arrester design group and MOV manufacturing operation. Additionally, we have a diverse mechanical test lab and thermal, environmental, and UV / salt fog aging capabilities.
