You might not think that Engineering could lead to a career in investment finance but the ability of Engineers to solve deep problems using quantitative and computational thinking makes them a surprisingly good fit. Since the 1990s with the use of learning methods to execute automated trades and In recent years with the advent of high frequency trading, new engineering methods are always being implemented for assisting "Quants" in making investment decisions. This talk will touch on some of the challenges in the space (involving a thing called "signal processing", and recently AI) with stories about how your Engineering education and especially a Ph.D, can lead you to interesting places.

Bio : Dr. Claire Gallagher is a portfolio manager and lead researcher within the Multi-Asset Strategies & Solutions (MASS) team at BlackRock in London https://www.blackrock.com/uk/professionals/solutions/multi-asset-strategies-solutions. She is part of a global team and has direct responsibility for managing a range of strategies combining active asset allocation and risk management. Claire studied the BAI Electronic and Computer Engineering at Trinity and went on to complete a PhD with the Sigmedia group. Prior to joining BlackRock, Claire worked as a quantitative analyst at Orbis Investment Advisory Ltd.  She is a CFA®  charterholder.
