Advanced Metering Infrastructure - It’s not just for meter data anymore

PPL Electric Utilities is currently working on installing its second generation Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).  PPL EU was the first large utility to install a Power Line Carrier (PLC) automated meter reading system in 2002.  The new system will incorporate an RF mesh network and create a wireless communications network across the entire PPL EU service territory.  This network is being designed to deliver more than meter data.  The new meters will also be sensors at the end of the electrical system and provide feedback to enhance operational capabilities and the customer experience.  PPL EU is the first utility to design its network to include smart grid device data on the same network as meter data.  This presentation will be a practical exploration of some of the history, the current status and the future possibilities of utility metering.  Come and see what data will be available to the customer and discuss the opportunities.
