This will be a three part briefing on the devleopment of the SR-71. Starting with s short 5 minute video done with Lockheed-Martin on their 100th Anniversary, followed by a power point briefing in titled “Kelly’s Greatest Challenge - the Blackbirds”. And if there is more interest; a 7 minute video saluting Kelly Johnson for a lifetime of incredible work. The briefing itself will trace of history of the development, the challenges, the operational fielding, and years of incredible excellence in executing national taskings of the SR-71 Blackbird.

Buz Carpenter
Kelly’s Greatest Challenge - the Blackbirds
Biography:
Hailing from Oakland, California; Col. Buz Carpenter (ret.) graduated from the US Air Force Academy in June 1967 and then completed pilot training at Williams AFB, AZ in September 1968.
During his career, he flew multiple aircraft, including:
C-141 worldwide airlift as an Aircraft Commander – 1350 hrs
RF-4C in Vietnam combat with 150 combat hours and later in Japan, served as Flight Commander and Instructor Pilot – 1150 hours
SR-71 Flown worldwide as an aircraft commander and later Instructor Pilot with over 65+ operational missions accruing 777 hours.
T-38 Companion Trainer & Instructor Pilot – 500+ hours
USAF program manager in the Pentagon involving programs such as F-117, B-2 Bomber, F-22 and others.
F-4E Fighter Squadron Commander – 450+ hours. and transitioned the fighter squadron to F-16 A/Bs
Wing commander in Europe at Ramstein AB, Germany during the Gulf War – Desert Shield & Desert Storm
U-2 flights as staff officer – 12 + hours
Buz retired as a USAF Colonel after serving as the Vice Commander, 2nd Air Force, where he was responsible for all the USAF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance flying assets. Buz currently serves as a docent at The Udvar Hazy Center of the National Air & Space Museum at Dulles airport.
