Introduction to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Commercial Power Reactors

This talk will present an overview of nuclear power reactors and an introduction to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Biography:

Andrew Persinko worked at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for 31 years, most recently as the Deputy Director of the Division of uranium recovery, low level waste, and decommissioning, overseeing the work of 90 nuclear professionals. His responsibilities included safety of uranium recovery facilities, disposal of low level radioactive waste, and the decommissioning and clean up of reactor and nuclear materials facilities.

He began his NRC career in 1979 as a technical reviewer of structural designs to resist earthquakes. He also served as a reactor inspector, project manager in decommissioning older reactors, and project manager in nuclear materials safety. In addition, he worked as a consultant to the Department of Energy at the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant in Colorado.

Andrew has a bachelors degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware and a masters degree in civil engineering from MIT, specializing in seismic structural engineering.

Currently retired from the NRC, Andrew is pursuing a second career as an adjunct math professor at Montgomery College.
