In honor of Claude Shannon – the father of information theory and arguably of all communications and networked systems – Bell Labs has created the Shannon Luminary Lecture Series and Award, to explore all topics of high impact and relevance to the future of human existence, with an annual series of ten talks by the leading visionary researchers, developers, thinkers and entrepreneurs from all fields of scientific, technological, engineering, mathematical, or related artistic endeavor.

The next Lecture will be given by Zhenan Bao, professor of Chemical Engineering at Stanford. Zhenan will speak about her research leading up to the world’s first development of a new skin-like material that can ‘feel’ pressure and transmit a signal to the nervous system. Bao is a leading visionary and innovator in nanoscience, chemical engineering, and materials science, and her recent work promises to fundamentally change prosthetics and other areas of medicine and engineering. Please join us for Zhenan’s illuminating presentation in the Hamming Innovation Hall on the Murray Hill Bell Labs Campus on December 1, starting at 1 pm.
