This presentation discusses current surge protective device standards and best practices. Although NYC currently recognizes the 2008 National Electrical Code (NEC), there have been several additions through 2017 to the National Electrical Code which will eventually be adopted by NYC. The purpose of these additions was to prevent damage to emergency power controls and critical electronic loads. The discussion will include: an overview of electrical surges, how SPDs operate, surge cause and effects, IEEE recommended practices, NEC standard and relevant updates regarding SPDs, what to look for during the submittal stage regarding SPDs; and lastly, factors to consider when using internal ( product integrated ) versus external surge protective devices.
