Silicon Photonic Integrated Circuits
IEEE NJ Coast ED/MTT/PHO Talk
This talk will review the technical merits of silicon photonic devices and integrated circuits, which have benefited from high-index-contrast silicon waveguides, a high integration level of various optical functions on the same chips, and mature complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication techniques. These technical merits assure silicon photonics as a disruptive optical technology that will achieve low-cost and compact optical modules for data communications, with applications such as chip-scale optical interconnects, short-reach communications in datacenters and supercomputers, and metro/long-haul optical transmissions. In particular, we review silicon photonic circuits for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmitters, WDM receivers, coherent optical transmitters and coherent receivers, photonic networks-on-chip, and silicon photonic light sources. The remaining challenges will be also be discussed.

Dr Po Dong of Nokia Bell-labs
Silicon Photonic Integrated Circuits
Biography:
Po Dong is currently a technical manager at Bell Labs, Nokia. He is working on developing photonic integrated circuits to achieve high-bandwidth and low-power optical links. Previous to Bell Labs, he worked as a principal engineer at Kotura Inc., where he was leading the silicon photonic effort on ultra-performance nanophotonic intrachip communications and photonic analog signal processing engines. From 2005 to 2007, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Cornell University, Ithaca, USA. He received the Ph. D. degree in electrical engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. His research areas mainly include photonic integrated circuits, nonlinear optics, and atomic coherence. He has authored and co-authored more than 150 journal and conference publications, and two book chapters. He is serving as a committee member or chair of optical conferences such as Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC), Conference on Lasers and Electro-optics (CLEO), and Integrated Photonics Research, Silicon, and Nano-Photonics (IPR), and also an associated editor of Optics Express from 2012. He is a senior member of IEEE and a fellow of OSA.
