The first event of the year 2017 will be a lunch meeting at Hutchinson Center, Belfast, ME. The Hutchinson Center is an outreach center for the University of Maine in Orono, that serves as an educational and cultural center for the mid-coast area. It offers many academic opportunities and provides a variety of spaces for conferences and meetings.

Our speaker Dr. Rafael Grossmann, an exciting internationally known speaker, is a trauma surgeon at EMMC and uses technology extensively in his practice. He is the world's first surgeon to use Google Glass during live surgery. He has been invited by many international conferences and TED talk multiple times including topics: "Ok glass, I need a surgeon", "OK Glass - disrupt healthcare", "iPod Teletrauma", and "Google glass and other marvels in healthcare and beyond". His TED talks are on YouTube and his personal website http://rafaelgrossmann.com/. Recently, he has been heavily involved with VR, Augmented and Mixed Reality platforms. Dr. Grossmann will talk about his most recent experiences and the state-of-the-art technologies that involve in trauma surgeons and the healthcare field in our lunch meeting. His presentation will be of importance and interest to both members and guests.

A tour of Front Street Shipyard (101 Front Street, Belfast, ME 04915) will follow the luncheon meeting. Front Street Shipyard was founded to create a place in Maine where yachts of all sizes from all over the world can get the best possible service and attention. Front Street Shipyard has the ingenuity and experience to undertake the most sophisticated boat building and refit projects. The yard’s team of more than 100 experienced boat service professionals uses both advanced composite construction and traditional boat building techniques. HoloLens and More

As a practicing trauma surgeon and educator; it can be hard at times to find the right balance between “theory & practice”, between what one knows and what one is supposed to have learned. It is a struggle and an obvious source of stress and anxiety for them. Medicine is a complex and always evolving field, where there is never enough time to read, learn, and practice what is necessary to the level of excellency that is needed, given that the core of the matter is the care of fellow human beings. The smart integration of technology makes a tangible and meaningful difference in healthcare. There’s is so much work to do and the status quo is deficient, yes, very deficient in both medicine and medical education today. Revolutionary platforms such as Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality immerse and interact with the content in ways never thought possible before.

Biography:

Dr. Rafael Grossmann is originally from Caracas, Venezuela. After doing his surgery residency in Ann Arbor, MI, he has developed as a General, Trauma, Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic surgeon and now practices in Maine, USA. Throughout his career, he has focused in tapping the paradoxical power of technology to coexist with a better, more humane medical care.

As a healthcare futurist, being a full-time practicing surgeon, gives him the rare skills, qualities and advantages that clinicians have but most technology innovators lack.

That duality of expertise makes him a voice that definitely should be heard. A voice that impacts and addresses both ends of the spectrum, diversifying the target audience, feeding multiple interests and curiosities.

As an Exponential Medicine/Singularity University alumnus and faculty, his passion is at the intersection of Innovation Technology and Healthcare.

“I know that the exponential development of technology and its smart use, will profoundly, positively impact the Healthcare system in ways that are difficult to even imagine”. After graduating from Singularity, “I have constantly worked to define myself as a Healthcare Futurist”.
