The IEEE QLD Section's Control Systems/Robotics and Automation Society presents a series of talks on Automation, Control System, Robotic, Human Interaction & Reliability (ARHR). The first installement of this series will be given by Dr. Alberto Elfes of CSIRO on Friday 28 April 5.00pm-6.00pm. Details are given below:

Date: Friday 28 April

Time: 5.00pm - 6.00pm

Venue: Room 78-420, GP-South Building 78, University of Queensland, St. Lucia, QLD

Title: Robotics for the Good of Australia

Abstract:
The application of robotic technologies is growing at an exponential rate. The agricultural
robot market is expected to reach $30B by 2025, medical robotics is expanding at over 20%
per year, autonomous cars are reaching technological maturity, and manufacturing is
being reshored through the use of advanced robotic systems. In this talk we will explore
the opportunities for robotics in the Australian context and provide an overview of robotics
research and development at CSIRO. We will showcase the use of cutting-edge 3D robot mapping
technologies to digitise natural and artificial environments, and illustrate the deployment of
autonomous wheeled, legged, aerial and aquatic robots to address problems of core interest to Australia.

Speaker bio:

Dr. Alberto Elfes is a Chief Research Scientist and the Group Leader for Robotics Research in CSIRO.
Before joining CSIRO in 2011, he held a number of senior research leadership positions, including Principal
Research Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Alberto has led projects in autonomous
aerial, ocean and ground robots for Earth science missions and planetary exploration. His current research
interests include large-scale legged robots for traversal of extreme terrain; robots and sensing systems to support
biodiversity assessments in tropical forests; and 3D multi-modal perception. Alberto has over 150 publications in
international journals and conferences, and has given over 350 invited and keynote talks in the USA, Europe,
Japan, Australia and Brazil. He is a recipient of the Mercator Professorship Award of the DFG (German Research
Foundation), several NASA awards, and a CSIRO Newton-Turner award. He is also an Honorary Professor at
the University of Queensland.
