"The University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center is a world-leading, interdisciplinary center for research, education, and economic development encompassing material sciences, manufacturing, and engineering of composites and structures. The Center is housed in a 100,000 ft2 ISO 17025-accredited testing laboratory with more than 150 full and part time personnel." https://composites.umaine.edu/

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Advanced Manufacturing Center is part of the University of Maine’s College of Engineering. The mission of the AMC program is to link the traditional University of Maine activities of education and research with the University’s active industrial support and economic development programs.

The Advanced Manufacturing Center is an engineering support and service center that is dedicated to promoting economic development in Maine, and supporting the research programs at the University of Maine. The AMC is also readily accessible to businesses, entrepreneurs, and researchers throughout Maine, and North America.

The AMC program is committed to maintaining a first-class facility equipped with the latest manufacturing technologies. The Advanced Manufacturing Center will design and build prototype and development projects ranging from large scale fabrications to machined parts with micro-millimeter tolerances. It has the ability to expand its range of expertise by working with engineering faculty, other UMaine research centers, and partners in private industry." https://umaine.edu/amc/about/

"The ECE Department, faculty offices, and teaching and research laboratories are located in Barrows Hall and in the adjoining Engineering & Science Research Building (ESRB). The ESRB also houses the Laboratory for Surface Science and Technology (LASST), a interdisciplinary research unit exploring advanced materials spanning the spectrum from basic science to applied technology. The ESRB opened its doors July 2004 and contains state-of-the-art research facilities, including a microfabrication cleanroom." https://ece.umaine.edu/research/

"The Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) program at the University of Maine prepares students for professional electrical engineering careers in industry. The program provides students with the theory and “hands-on” experience necessary for them to quickly become productive in their jobs after graduation." https://umaine.edu/eet/

"UM Central Steam Plant: Boiler Replacement Project

A new 60,000 lb/hr boiler and flue gas economizer replaced the two oldest and least efficient boilers in the Central Steam Plant.  Boiler 8 has dual fuel capability, is fired on natural gas with provision for renewable landfill gas.

  • Expected annual heating fuels reduction of approximately 30,000 mmbtu (million BTU), which is  equivalent to 216,000 gallons of #2 fuel oil per year, or the total energy consumption of approximately 230 New England households per year.
  • Expected annual greenhouse gas emissions reduction of approximately 6,000 Metric Tons CO2e, the equivalent of taking in excess of 1100 passenger vehicles off the road." https://umaine.edu/ofm/home/energy-utilities/

The Maine IEEE PES/IAS Chapter will hold a raffle during the BBQ.  Students who join the student chapter distribution list during the BBQ will be entered in the raffle.  The fees collected for this event will be for the BBQ and to support the student branch.  If you do not want to take part in the BBQ and interactions with the student branch, the tour alone, is free.
