Mike Knowland Mike Knowland of ISO New England

Topic:

When an Eclipse Strikes, Be Prepared!

New England was witness to a partial solar eclipse in the early afternoon hours of August 21, 2017, an event that could potentially have had a significant impact on power grid operations, given the right conditions. Fortunately for New England, the combination of solar panel installations, solar obscuration during the eclipse, weather conditions during the event, and the flexibility of New England power generation resources, the event was reliably managed by System Operators. This presentation will discuss what System Operators see on the power grid during an eclipse, expected indications vs. reality, what could have been, and what’s next.

Biography:

Mike Knowland has served as the Supervisor of Operations Forecast and Scheduling at ISO New England since October 2016. His previous roles at ISO include System Operator and Principal Engineer in support of System Operations. Prior to working at ISO New England, Mike spent 8 years in the Navy as a Reactor Operator and Engineering Watch Supervisor on submarine plants, both seagoing and land based. He has a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a M.S. in Power System Management from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Fabio Dallorto Fabio Dallorto of ISO New England

Topic:

Storms of a Different Kind – Space Weather and the Electric Power Grid

The first part of the talk will cover the basic physics behind the geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) phenomenon, together with its potential repercussions on the high voltage electric transmission network. Furthermore, the talk will expand upon the latest North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) mandatory standard enacted to establish the magnitude of the GMD threat on the grid, and review possible mitigation strategies.

Biography:

Fabio Dallorto is an Associate Engineer in the Transmission Planning Department at ISO New England. He is a member of the ISO New England Geomagnetic Disturbances Working Group, which is analyzing the potential effects and remediation measures required for the secure operation and planning of the New England power grid. A native of Italy, Fabio holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from UMASS Amherst.
