Please join us for the Central Iowa Section meeting hosted by the ISU Student Branch.  Free pizza and pop will be provided before the presentation.

Also we are privileged to have two Distinguished Lecturer Talks scheduled for this week!

Nanophotonics is an active research field that studies the light-matter interactions at nanoscale. Nanophotonic research is interdisciplinary and recently boosted by the advances in photonics, materials, and fabrication technologies. R&D of nanophotonics has the potential to provide more efficient and compact devices for the application, such as light sources (LED and laser), solar cells, imaging sensor, optical communication, microscopy, and spectroscopy. During this Central Iowa IEEE Section Meeting, nanophotonic devices will be introduced, and the physical principles behind these devices will be explained at a level suitable for a generalist audience.

Future:

1)  Dr. Petropulu from Rutgers University will present an IEEE Signal Processing Society Distinguished Lecture on Wednesday, October 18, at 1 PM.  The title is Enhancing QoS in Beamforming Networks: Mobile Beamformers and Optimal Motion Policies.   See https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/47352 for details and to register.

2)  Michelle Thompson will present an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Lecture on Friday, October 20, at 1 PM.  The title is Representation Matters.  See https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/47770 for details and to register.

3)  STEM Festival at DMACC Central Campus in Ankeny, October 23.  Setup at 5 PM with the event from 6 - 8 PM.  We will use Squishy circuits.

4) Annual Dinner and Meeting at The Baker Group in Ankeny, Thursday, Nov. 9. Dean of the College of Engineering at ISU, Dr. Sara Rajala, will be our guest and will give a presentation.

5) Maker Faire at Plymouth Church in Des Moines, Tuesday Nov. 14, from 5 - 7 PM, we need soldering helpers for 6th - 8th graders.  Co-sponsored by our Section and Plymouth Church.

Meng Lu

Topic:

Nanophototonics

Biography:

Dr. Meng Lu is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Iowa State University. His research interests focus on nanophotonics for energy and biomedical applications. Lu’s research laboratory (Laboratory of Integrated Optical Sensors) aims to solve challenging problems, such as liquid biopsy, antimicrobial resistance, and infrared wavelength conversion. Dr. Lu is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award (2017), Iowa State University's Early Career Engineering Faculty Research Award (2017), Boast-Nilsson Educational Impact Award (2017), 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award (2015-2017), and Northrop Grumman Assistant Professorship (2014). He was a research scientist at SRU Biosystems Inc. (Woburn, MA) and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2009 to 2013. Dr. Lu received his B.S. degree from University of Science and Technology of China in 2002, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2004 and 2008, respectively.
