Making Healthcare Green: The Role of Cloud, Green IT, and Data Science to Reduce Healthcare Costs and Combat Climate Change

This presentation will give practical information on how green healthcare (whose major sub-segment is “hospitals”) can contribute to solving the Climate Crisis by adopting Green IT practices. The recent UN Climate Agreement on reducing carbon emissions reached in Paris during December, 2015, helps continue to raise awareness to the need to reduce electricity use through efficiency. Green Healthcare, Green Computing, and Green IT (Information Technology) are all excellent ways to reduce electricity use and save money doing it.
Globally, the healthcare sector is growing in importance and plays a key role in world economics. The healthcare sector makes heavy use of technology including social media. Technological advances have revolutionized the healthcare industry worldwide – from modern testing techniques to improved surgical equipment, remote health monitoring technologies with the help of modern digital equipment, etc. There are many online healthcare portals. The complexity of the healthcare industry helps account for the large environmental footprint. Healthcare accounts for 8% of the U.S. carbon footprint.
This presentation will give examples of how Data Science, Big Data, Analytics, and Cloud Technology can be used in healthcare to significantly improve a hospital’s IT Energy Efficiency along with information on the best ways to improve energy efficiency for healthcare in a cost effective manner.

Biography:
John Lamb retired from IBM on December 31, 2013 after more than 40 years with the company. He is currently an adjunct professor of mathematics at Pace University in Pleasantville, NY. A senior member of the IEEE and ASME engineering societies, he has published more than 50 technical papers and articles. He has also authored five books on computer technologies including the May 2009 book: "The Greening of IT: How Companies Can Make a Difference for the Environment." ISBN 0137150830
