Abstract:  This presentation will focus on the following THz technology topics:

Some of our work involves the following:

  • Standoff detection of CW agents with continuous wave THz in the .1-2.0 THz range.
  • Detection of damage precursors in composites with THz.
  • Detection of subsurface voids in acoustic matting for ONR.
  • Standoff detection of special nuclear materials by the effects of gamma rays on meta-material absorbers.
  • Standoff detection of adversarial intent (remote sensing of pulmonary, cardiovascular activities with mmW/THz and subsurface musculature with MWIR) at 10-50 m.

The reason we haven’t progressed into the marketplace is many-fold, however it can be summed up as the confluence of nuances of government contracting, followed by the issues with price and manufacturability of THz devices, and the methodologies for handling large amounts of disparate data in real or near-real time.  The first one will be an ongoing conundrum, but the last two areas have been rapidly converging to a price/delivery point that behooves further thought.
