Title:  Large Area Electronics for Active Matrix Displays & Sensors

 

Abstract:  Some features of  large area electronics are briefly reviewed from a display perspective. Three examples in the areas of system, array, and device design are presented to demonstrate the importance of each in the overall design. First, the prevalent System-on-Panel (SoP) concept is challenged where the success of Gate-on-Array (GoA) designs does not imply the necessity of integrating other circuits onto the display panel to achieve optimal system operation. Secondly, pixel circuit design must necessarily consider the the whole array perspective because although some single pixel circuits seem to be workable, they fail when integrated into the large area matrix. Lastly, a gap-gate TFT sensing device made in a process that is fully compatible with a thin film transistor is introduced and the issue of instability is discussed.

Biography:

Ya-Hsiang Tai was born in 1967. He received his BS and Ph.D degree in Electronic Engineering from National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, in 1990 and 1996 respectively. His Ph. D dissertation is about the reliability of amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin film transistor (TFT). He was elected to be an honorary member of Phi-Tau-Phi Scholastic Honor Society twice in 1990 and 1996.

He became a member of Industrial Technology Research Institute / Electronics Research & Service Organization and participated the TFT LCD development as a panel designer and leaved as a section manager. During this period, his working included the installation of TFT array tester, the reverse engineering of more than 10 TFT LCD products, the ESD test on the TFT devices, the panel design of an in-plane-switch (IPS) wide-view-angle TFT LCD, the software development of instrument control, probe station control, device parameter extraction and statistical database for a fully-automatic device characterization system with large area substrate. He joined the project of LTPS TFT development in Prime View International in 2000 for a period, and then in 2001, he entered Toppoly Optoelectronics Corp. (currently merged to Innolux Corp.) to lead the team of LTPS TFT LCD panel design and established the design flow and procedures. His team designed various LTPS TFT LCD panels for the applications in digital camera, cellular phone, personal digital assistant, car navigation, and notebook PC. He also acted as the project leader of product development for several products.

He joined the faculty of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) in 2003, where he is currently an associate professor in the Display Institute & Department of Photonics. He wrote a book entitled “Design and Operation of TFT-LCD Panel” in Chinese in 2006. His current research research interest is about the technologies for the active matrix display and sensors. The research topics focus on the device characteristics of thin film transistors (TFTs), as well as how such devices applied in the display and sensing circuits.
