DESCRIPTION:Speaker : Prof. K.D. Srivastava\, University of British Columbi
a\, Canada Abstract: Oil-paper insulation systems have been in use for a l
ong time in electrical power apparatus\, such as\, generators\, motors\, t
ransformers and cables. The operating voltages\, particularly for high vol
tage cables have been continually increasing and 1000 kV designs are avail
able. In the last few decades the range of insulating materials\, in addit
ion to the various insulating liquids\, has also expanded gratly. Some oth
er developments in the application domain have adversely impacted the perf
ormance and life-time of the above apparatus. For example the extensive us
e of inverters and converters\, which generate repetitive fast-front overv
oltage transients. In addition\, the use of SF6 insulated compact substati
ons also generate such transients in the operating voltage range of such c
ompact substations. The accumulated field experience shows apparatus failu
res often occur. This presentation gives a summary of R&D findings about t
he possible failure modes of oil-paper insulation in service.\n\nCo-sponso
