DESCRIPTION:Speaker : Prof. K.D. Srivastava\, University of British Columbi
a\, Canada Abstract: Several university campuses in North America have com
mitted to work with energy sector industrial partners to establish sustain
ability initiatives. The hope is that such alliances should enable the cam
puses to be prepared as the new technologies are 'mature' . At UBC\, the i
nitiative exploits the needed requirements of the campus physical infrastr
uctures. It would enable UBC to demonstrate clean sustainable technologies
and practices. The other strategic advantages are new R&D opportunities a
nd enhancing our undergraduate and graduate teaching. Institutions\, such
as universities have the operational advantage of being a 'single' ownersh
ip operation\, and the dominant public policy issues\, such as tariffs\, a
re not a major factor. In 2010\,UBC adopted a climate action plan\, commit
ting to aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets of: 33% below the 2007
levels by 2015 and increasing the reduction levels to be 100% below by 20
50. This presentation describes the UBC experience to date\, and how the U
BC community is benefitting from this living lab. initiative!\n\nCo-sponso
