 ICROGRID: OPERATION AND CONTROL Date : 09.01.2013\, Venue : L-14\, Time : 
 5:00-6:00 PM(Tea will be served at 4:45 PM) Abstract: The smart grid initi
 ative will have significant influence both in transmission and distributio
 n level. In this seminar two important applications of voltage source conv
 erter (VSC) will be discussed. First the use of VSC in HVDC lightR will be
  discussed starting from a point to point link operation to a DC grid. The
  benefits of the HVDC technology are highlighted with basic components\, c
 ontrol techniques and system operations. In the second part of the present
 ation Microgrid will be considered. The aspects of system stability and di
 fferent stability improvement methods in a microgrid scenario will be disc
 ussed. While stability problems are instigated by different factors in var
 ious types of microgrids\, efficacy of the stability improvement methods m
 ay vary largely depending on the application and the system scenarios. Abo
 ut the Speaker: Dr Ritwik Majumder is working in ABB Corporate Research\, 
 Sweden. He received his Ph.D from Queensland University of Technology\, Br
 isbane\, Australia. From 2004 to 2007\, he worked with Siemens and ABB Cor
 porate Research Centre\, India. His interests are in Power Systems dynamic
 s\, Distributed Generation and Power Electronics Applications. -----------
