DESCRIPTION:This presentation will cover two of the main areas of research
at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition in Pensacola\, FL. One is
knowledge modeling. This is the use of computer technology to capture and
represent the knowledge of experts in the electric utilities. With the im
manent retirement of the “boomer” generation\, the utilities are at ri
sk for losing an entire generation of its most knowledgeable and experienc
ed experts. Using our Concept Map Tools\, we capture the knowledge of expe
rts who possess unique knowledge. This can then be shared with others in t
raining and mentoring contexts. We have worked with experts in nuclear pow
er\, power generation and coordination and other areas of specialization.
The second area of IHMC work that will be discussed is our work on robotic
s and related technologies for space exploration. This includes the design
of new vehicles for exploration of planets\, moons and asteroids.\n\nSpea
