DESCRIPTION:Beginning in 2018\, Professional Engineers in Ohio must obtain
2 hours of ethics-related training during each renewal period. Come to thi
s IEEE PACE event to obtain 1 hour of P.E. credit and hear valuable advice
on professional ethics!\n\nConflicts of interest are at the root of many
ethical issues arising within the engineering profession and workplaces. P
ersonal gain for yourself as an individual\, for someone you care about\,
or for the business you work for can create situations and dilemmas where
right versus wrong is not always clear as you take actions and make decisi
 ons.\n\n“I have integrity and respect others. I don’t cheat\, lie\, or
steal. I learned this stuff as a small child.” Why ethics training? Eth
ics training is not about teaching you to be a good person. It is about le
arning the ethical standards that apply to you as a professional. You need
to recognize when there could be a conflict of interest and know what act
ions you can take. Not an easy task!\n\nThe good news is\, there is help!
In this talk\, common types of conflicts of interest will be discussed wit
h engineering examples\, including the profit motive\, friends and family\
, symbiotic relationships\, and quid pro quo. The participants will be pre
sented with various techniques for avoiding conflicts of interest\, such a
s transparency\, arm’s length rule\, and ways of removing themselves fro
m the conflict. The session will include group exercises where the partici
pants will be considering and recommending actions for various possible co
nflicts of interest.\n\nParticipants will:\n\n- Learn the definition of Co
nflict of Interest and its role in Business Ethics\n- Learn how to identif
y Conflicts of Interest\n- Learn common techniques for avoiding Conflicts
of Interest\n- Practice the techniques in hands-on exercises\n\nCo-sponsor
 ed by: Columbus PES Chapter\n\nSpeaker(s): Ray Waite\, \n\nAgenda: \n5:30
 - 6:00 Light dinner and networking\n\n6:00 - 7:00 Presentation by Ray Wait
