DESCRIPTION:The incorporation of distributed renewable energy generation\, 
 smart control systems\, and\nelectric/hybrid vehicles into the existing gr
 id infrastructure are challenging but necessary\nsteps towards a more sust
 ainable future. This presentation will describe key technologies\nand tech
 niques that are necessary to modernize electrical generation\, distributio
 n and\nconsumption. The work that is currently ongoing at the University o
 f British Columbia’s\n(UBC) campus will be used to illustrate some moder
 n and future implementations.\nTechniques such as load shedding\, peak shi
 fting\, active power factor correction\, and\nbackup will be discussed. Th
 e technical challenges and solutions associated with\nimplementing these s
