DESCRIPTION:Prof Simon Watts will be giving a talk titled: "UK Maritime Sur
veillance Radars for the RAF 1940–2010" for the inaugural presentation f
or the AES Society as part of the society being re-established in the UK &
Ireland.\n\nAs part of the 1st organised meeting of the IEEE AES Society
we will are arranging a small drinks reception along with a meet and greet
component so members attending can meet the newly established committee m
embers. More information on the society can be found here:\n\nhttp://www.i
eee-ukandireland.org/chapters/aerospace-and-electronic-systems/\n\nAbstrac
t: The history of airborne radars developed in the UK for long range marit
ime surveillance by the RAF spans from 1940\, when ASV Mk. I entered servi
ce on Sunderland and Hudson aircraft\, through to the 1980s\, when the Sea
rchwater radar entered service on the Nimrod MR2. This history came to an
end in 2010 when the Nimrod MRA4 programme was cancelled and the Nimrod MR
2 taken out of service.\n\nDuring WWII the first UK centimetric ASV radars
were developed (ASV Mks III & VI and latterly ASV Mk. VII)\, fitted to ai
rcraft such as the Sunderland\, Halifax and Wellington\, used by Coastal C
ommand. In 1950\, the Shackleton MR aircraft entered service\, with the AS
V Mk. 13 radar\, upgraded to ASV 21 in 1959. The Nimrod MR1 replaced to Sh
ackletons in 1970\, fitted with the ASV 21D radar\, and in 1980 the Nimrod
MR2 with the Searchwater radar was introduced.\n\nProf Simon Watts Bio:\n
\nSimon Watts graduated from the University of Oxford in 1971\, obtained a
n MSc and DSc from the University of Birmingham in 1972 and 2013\, respect
ively\, and a PhD from the CNAA in 1987. He was deputy Scientific Director
and Technical Fellow in Thales UK until 2013 and is a Visiting Professor
in the department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at University C
ollege London. He joined Thales (then EMI Electronics) in 1967 and worked
on a wide range of radar and EW projects\, with a particular research inte
rest in maritime radar and sea clutter. He is author and co-author of over
80 journal and conference papers\, a book on sea clutter and several pate
nts. He was chairman of the international radar conference RADAR-97 in Edi
nburgh UK. Professor Watts received the IEE JJ Thomson Premium Award in 19
87 and the IEE Mountbatten Premium Award in 1991. He serves on the IEEE AE
SS Radar Systems Panel\, is an Associate Editor for Radar for the IEEE Tra
nsactions AES and a member of the Editorial Board of IET Radar\, Sonar & N
avigation. He was appointed MBE in 1996 for services to the UK defence ind
ustry and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering\, Fellow of the
IET\, Fellow of the IMA and Fellow of the IEEE.\n\nRoom: Room 508\, Bldg:
