DESCRIPTION:Abstract—Some new perspectives are presented on the seminal e
xperiment Hertz carried out in 1888 to establish the validity of Maxwell
’s theory by showing that the velocity of man-made electromagnetic waves
was the same as that of light. Both measured and theoretical results are
given that were obtained using modern tools of measurement and analysis. T
ime-dependent waveforms are shown that were obtained using a digital oscil
loscope to measure both the input voltage pulse provided by a small induct
ion coil and the radiated field produced by replicas of the antennas Hertz
employed. The standing waves Hertz observed using micrometer-driven spark
gaps at the terminals of his receiving loops are shown to correlate well
with the RMS value of the entire transient field produced by a single disc
harge. Results obtained from the use of both circuit theory and modern ant
enna software are shown to be in substantial agreement with measurements e
xcept where noted. Deficiencies imposed by the laboratory where Hertz work
 ed are discussed.\n\nKeywords—dipole antenna\; sparks\; electromagnetic
 measurements\; electromagnetic radiation\; equivalent circuits\; history.\
