 rts in the field of nanophotonics to reduce the speed of light (ultimately
  reaching zero group velocity) and manipulate the way that light interacts
  with the objects. While optical communication ensures high speed data tra
 nsportation what would be the benefits of slowing down the light propagati
 on in optical waveguides. Similarly\, detection and imaging are very impor
 tant applications of photonics. However\, making an object invisible (if p
 ossible) at first seems counterintuitive. The importance of optical invisi
 bility and slow light studies will be explained during the presentation.\n
 \nBio: Hamza Kurt received the B.S. degree from Middle East Technical Univ
 ersity (METU)\, Ankara\, Turkey\, in 2000\, the M.S. degree from the Unive
 rsity of Southern California (USC)\, Los Angeles\, CA\, USA\, in 2002\, an
 d the Ph.D. degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech)
 \, Atlanta\, GA\, USA\, in 2006\, all in electrical and electronics engine
 ering. He was a Research Fellow with the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center\, Bio
 -photonics Research Lab\, Los Angeles\, from 2001 to 2002. He was a post-d
 octoral Research Fellow with Georgia Tech for a short period and then he h
 as spent a year with the Institut d’Optique Graduate School\, Paris\, Fr
 ance\, as a post-doctoral Scientist. Since December 2007\, he has been wit
 h the TOBB University of Economics and Technology\, Ankara and promoted to
  full-professor level in 2015. He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed
  scientific papers including two invited papers and six single-author pape
 rs. He has given contributed and invited presentations and published more 
 than 100 conference abstracts and proceedings. His current research intere
 sts include nanophotonics including the design and analysis of nanophotoni
 c materials and media for the realization of wavelength and sub-wavelength
  scale optical elements\, slow light structures\, graded index optics\, hi
 gh-resolution imaging\, polarization insensitive devices\, optical cavitie
 s/waveguides\, optical biosensors\, and metasurfaces (flat-optics).\n\nPro
 f. Kurt received the Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award 2010\, TOBB Uni
 versity and Turkish Academy of Sciences Distinguished Young Scientist Awar
 d (TUBA-GEBIP) 2010. He is a member of the Optical Society of America\, IE
 EE Photonics Society and associate member of Turkish Academy of Sciences.
