DESCRIPTION:A group of 43 students and 4 faculty members from the Electrica
l and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of Independent University\, Bangladesh
(IUB) visited the Khulna Shipyard Ltd and Orion Power Rupsha Ltd during a
4-day industrial tour from 21-24 November\, 2018. The purpose of the indus
trial tour was to give the students a practical idea about the application
s of engineering in commercial industry as well as to make collaboration w
ith the industrial sectors. The tour was organized by Department of EEE\,
IUB in collaboration with IEEE Industrial Application Society (IAS) Chapte
r of IUB.\nThe first part of the industrial tour was to visit the Khulna S
hipyard Ltd. Founded in 1957\, Khulna Shipyard Limited is a ship construct
ion and repair yard at Khulna\, Bangladesh owned by the Government of Bang
ladesh under the Ministry of Defence and managed by the Bangladesh Navy. T
he shipyard is responsible for ship building\, making steel structures\, c
ivil works and other manufacturing jobs. The visiting team was welcomed by
the high officials of Khulna Shipyard Ltd. The students along with the fa
culty members and the officials from Khulna Shipyard Ltd had an introducto
ry session about the history\, development and purpose of the shipyard. Af
ter having refreshments\, the students visited the workshops of Khulna Shi
pyard Ltd notably Platter Shop\, Carpentry shop\, Civil Section\, Machine
Shop. Electrical shop\, Foundry Shop and Docking Section. The officials fr
om the shipyard explained the various works which are done inside the ship
yard. Enthusiastic students asked questions and gathered knowledge in vari
ous fields of engineering. They were delighted to witness the first war sh
ips BNS DURGAM and NISHAN which were built in Bangladesh.\nThe next part o
f the tour was the visit to Orion Power Rupsha Ltd.\, a privately-owned co
mmercial power plant located in Lobonchora\, Khulna. ORION\, one of the co
untry’s leading industrial conglomerates\, has developed a 105 MW power
plant\, which operates on six Wärtsilä-50 engines running on heavy fuel
oil (HFO). Mr. Bijoy Roy Chowdhury\, Senior Assistant Engineer of Orion Po
wer Rupsha Ltd also the alumnus of Department of EEE\, IUB gave a warm wel
come to the team from IUB. The students were divided into two groups and M
r. Bijoy and his team guided the students to the different sections of the
power plant. The students got to learn about the heavy fuel oil storage s
ystem\, water purification\, electricity generation and distribution\, pro
tective components in power plants\, switch yards\, control room and many
other useful stuffs. The whole visit was an interactive one where the high
er officials gave their remarks on the visit from IUB students and also sh
ared their experiences about working in the power plant. Later\, group pho
tos were taken to capture the memories of the tour.\nThe industrial tour w
as full of valuable learnings and a real life experience for the students.
During the four day long tour\, the students got the chance to stay in RR
F Training & Resource Centre (TARC) in Jessore and also they had the chanc
e to pay tribute to the great Bengali poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt by visi
ting his birthplace in Sagordari\, a village in Keshabpur Upazila\, Jessor
e District.\nThe whole tour was coordinated by Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak\, Asso
ciate Professor of EEE department along with Dr. Mustafa Habib Chowdhury\,
Assistant Professor\, Ms. Navila Rahman Nadi and Mr. Shovasis Kumar Biswa
