DESCRIPTION:It is my pleasure to introduce you to Prof. Hiranmay Saha\, an
eminent scientist and Sir S.S. Baral Chair Professor\, Indian Institute of
Engineering\, Science and Technology Shibpur. Prof. Saha is visiting IIT
Mandi on 17th August 2018 to deliver Innovation Lecture on "Ïnnovation on
Power Generation from Solar and Biowaste". The lecture is organized at ro
om no. A1-NKN\, IIT Mandi on August 17\, 2018 at 1700 hrs. The abstract of
the talk and a brief biography of Prof. Saha is attached herewith for you
r kind consideration. I am sure his inspiring words on innovation will def
initely create a spark in the young minds and nurture their creative facul
ties towards engineering innovation. Refreshments will be served after the
talk.\nSee you all then.\n\nAbsstract:\n\nEnsuring energy security by pro
viding 24x7 electricity to rural and semi-urban sector is a major challeng
e in India and similar countries. Use of Distributed Energy Resources ( DE
R) utilising Renewable energy resources like Solar\, Biomass\, Wind etc in
an integrated manner through a Microgrid Unit can in principle solve this
problem. However interfacing the Microgrid with the existing utility and
proper management and operation of this system is a major challenge at pre
sent. A small prototype of the proposed Microgrid comprising of Solar\, Wi
nd and Biomass generator has been designed and installed in the IIEST camp
us and has been running for about two years. The Biomass generator utilise
s the entire kitchen waste and table waste inside the IIEST campus\, thus
keeping the campus clean and delivering green energy from the Biowaste. A
Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) is integrated in the Microgrid unit to
ensure 24x7 energy security and availability of quality power on demand. S
uitable Battery Management System for its integration with the Microgrid V
RFB has also been designed and implemented.\n\nBrief Bio:\n\nProf . Hiranm
ay Saha \, born on January 4\, 1946 \, has been teaching and doing researc
h for the last 50 years first in Kalyani University \, then in Jadavpur Un
iversity and finally in BESU( currently IIEST). Currently he is a Chair Pr
ofessor and coordinator in the Centre of Excellence for Green Energy and S
ensor Systems\, in IIEST\, Shibpur.\n\n.\n\nHis research interests are in
solar cells and solar PV systems\, porous silicon\, gas and vapour sensors
including MEMS and VLSI design. His Phd work submitted in 1975 was on Sol
ar Cells and Systems. He has established one of the country’s first sola
r powered community TV centre at the village Charasarati near Kalyani Univ
ersity in 1978. He has also designed and helped implementation by OREDA of
India’s one of the first Solar PV Power Plant ( 26 kWp) in 1988 at Lull
ung\, Simplipal Forest in Orissa. Recently he has designed and helped impl
ementation of the 500 KWp canal top Solar PV power plant at the EKO Park\,
NewTown\, NKDA\, Kolkata. He has also played a key role in developing the
concept and specifications of solar lantern and its central charging stat
ion ( Indian patent). He has established a state of art lab for the fabrica
tion and characterization of c-Si and a-Si solar cells and also on Solar P
V systems at CEGESS\, IIEST as the Principal Investigator of two major R&D
Projects sponsored by DST and MNRE\, GOI. He has also established a Smart
Micro Grid Centre comprising of Solar\, Wind and Biogas Generators and VR
FB Battery System which was inauguratdby the President of India. He has pu
blished more than 300 papers in international and national journals and co
nferences\, supervised the PhD thesis of 25 students\, contributed chapter
s in research monograms on solar cell\, sensor and PV systems. He holds 12
patents . He has received the prestigious PVSEC award for his outstanding
contribution in Solar Photovoltaic systems.\n\nCo-sponsored by: CH10219 -
