DESCRIPTION:Andrew Long will provide an understanding of why wheelslide pro
tection systems (WSP) are implemented in rail vehicles and why they serve
as more than just an “Anti-flat” system to protect wheels. The attende
e will also gain an understanding of how WSP systems provide operational b
enefit to rail system operators. As a foundation for the description of WS
P system operation\, typical system and component designs for pneumatic an
d hydraulic brake systems applied to rail vehicles ranging from streetcars
to High-Speed trains will be described.\n\nThe functionality of a typical
friction brake WSP system along with standard integration schemes with el
ectro-dynamic brakes will be discussed along with an extension of the appl
ication of WSP to braking modes traditionally not WSP protected will be pr
esented. In conjunction with brake mode application discussions\, the safe
ty aspects of the systems applied to current rail vehicles will be address
ed. To provide the viewer a window into how systems are specified and vali
dated\, the presentation will contain information related to typical speci
fication requirements and practical test processes for confirmation of sys
tem performance including integrating aspects of European homologation sta
ndards.\n\nFinally\, to provide a small glimpse into the future\, next ste
ps in the evolution of Friction brake WSP control to improve performance u
nder varied rail conditions will be presented.\n\nSpeaker(s): Andrew Long\
