DESCRIPTION:HAC is pleased to confirm that it would like to provide some su
pport to “Hear\, here! Justice For All: Humanitarian Activities\, and Aw
ards Event Celebrating Our History: Inventing Our Future” (#19-EC1-26)\n
\nMade possible by IEEE-USA funding from member dues.\n\nMeet and Greet an
d Eat. Celebrate and discuss the IEEE Humanitarian Activities and Mock Tri
al Team Achievements. Discuss the significance of Humanitarian activities
in our society and around the world. Learn about the United Nations Sustai
nable Development Goals\, and how Advancing Technology for Humanity can re
duce disparity for those with Hearing Loss. Our project has involved explo
ring issues of how hearing loss impacts people in their lives\; we gather
inspiration from the History and enduring legacy of Alexander Graham Bell
and his wife Mabel Gardiner Hubbard Bell who together dedicated their live
s to Advancing Technology for Humanity.\n\nAt this Event\, you will meet t
he Mock Trial Team\, many of our Advisors\, and a variety of Stakeholders
in the Justice System and in the Community. Hear from Judges\, Attorneys\,
students\, advisors\, mock trial participants and others about their expe
riences. Enjoy a meal. Tell a story. Listen to a story.\n\nFrom the U.S. D
epartment of Justice\, Bureau of Justice Statistics Special Report on Disa
bilities Among Prison and Jail Inmates\, 2011-2012:\n\n"...disability type
s: hearing\, vision\, cognitive\, ambulatory\, self-care\, and independent
living.„ An estimated 32% of prisoners and 40% of jail inmates reported
having at least one disability.„ Prisoners were nearly 3 times more likel
y and jail inmates were more than 4 times more likely than the general pop
ulation to report having at least one disability."\n\nCommunications issue
s can lead to less Quality Education\, fewer opportunities in the Economy\
, and can increase consequences of poverty including poor health and the i
mpact of crime\, which is multi-faceted. Even in Court\, where people shou
ld be heard\, professionals might not be aware they must provide accommoda
tions. Costs can be Onerous for all the interactions among citizens\, atto
rneys\, witnesses\, family\, experts\, government\, Judges\, etc. It can b
e very challenging just to identify resources that are available for accom
modation\, and in some places including jails\, accommodations might not b
e available. Many people just give up\, fail to request accommodation or t
hey might not be aware they require accommodation\, and then they plead to
some crime or other (90% defendants take a plea rather than going to tria
l)\, resulting in going to jail or prison\, where things will get worse.\n
\nWe have focused on raising awareness\, listening to Stories\, and invest
igating how innovative technologies can reduce disparities while providing
access to the Justice System. We have been following the Mock Trial Team
through their seasons\, interacting with Attorneys\, Judges\, County Clerk
\, and others to gain greater understanding. Join us at Joe and Joe's Rest
aurant for Dinner\, Discussion\, Stories\, Trivia\, Photo and Video Booth.
