DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nRTDS Technologies is celebrating its 25th year in
business\, and we thought it would be a good time to reflect on the histor
y of the company\, what it has achieved\, where the company is now\, and h
ypothesize on what the future might bring.\n\nRTDS Technologies was founde
d in 1994 by James Giesbrecht\, Rick Kuffel\, Trevor Maguire\, Neil McKenz
ie\, and Rudi Wierckx using technology developed by and licensed from the
Manitoba HVDC Research Centre\, now part of Manitoba Hydro International.\
n\nJames\, Rick\, Trevor\, and Rudi were all key members of the team who d
eveloped the world’s first Real-Time Digital Simulator — RTDS®. Up un
til then\, real-time simulators were based primarily on analogue technolog
y\, with a limited number of digital models (e.g. machine models)\, which
were only available to a select few organizations due to the cost and size
of these systems. The introduction of the RTDS Simulator provided the rea
l-time performance required for Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) testing combine
d with the flexibility and accuracy of digital simulation.\n\nSince its in
vention\, real-time digital simulation\, and particularly the RTDS Simulat
or\, has had a tremendous impact on the power industry. For example\, the
RTDS Simulator has been used to perform the Factory Acceptance Testing for
every HVDC scheme installed in the world over the last 1-2 decades\, it i
s used by all major manufacturers of protective relays\, and it is a highl
y sought-after device for power system research groups around the globe.\n
\nThe presentation will summarize the development of the RTDS Simulator ov
er the last 25 years\, highlight some of the major installations\, and out
line present and possible future applications.\n\nThe Speaker is Paul Fors
yth. Paul received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Uni
versity of Manitoba\, Canada in 1988. After graduating he worked for sever
al years in the area of reactive power compensation and HVDC at ABB Power
Systems in Switzerland. He also spent two years at Haefely in both Germany
and Switzerland performing system studies and later as part of the networ
k component sales group. Mr. Forsyth has been employed by RTDS Technologie
s since 1995 where he currently holds the title of VP – Marketing & Sale
s.\n\nCo-sponsored by: Akbo Rupasinghe\n\nSpeaker(s): Paul Forsyth\, \n\nA
