DESCRIPTION:Why did Silicon Valley come into being? IEEE Life Fellow Paul W
esling fascinatingly pulls together tech\, financial\, and social factors
that mixed together to produce it:\n\n- local Hams (amateur radio operator
s) trying to break RCA's tube patents\;\n- Stanford “angel” investors\
;\n- the sinking of the Titanic\;\n- Fred Terman and Stanford University\;
\n- local invention of high-power tubes (gammatron\, klystron)\;\n- WW II
and radar\;\n- William Shockley's mother residence in Palo Alto\; and\n- t
he development of a supportive SF Bay Area infrastructure.\n\nThese factor
s mixed together placed the semiconductor and IC industries into the Santa
 Clara Valley\, and the infrastructure development helps to keep it there
as new technologies emerged.\n\nStill… worldwide\, similar factors can b
e placed to promote local innovation. Dr. Bob Lucky will present a story o
f one attempt to replicate this\, and what would still be needed to replic
ate this today – reenergizing the Monmouth/Ocean area\, and the rest of
NJ\, as a leader in tech innovation. (After all\, the FIRST Menlo Park was
 in NJ\, not CA!)\n\nSpeaker(s): Paul Wesling\, MS\, IEEE Life Fellow\, Dr
. Bob Lucky\, Ph.D.\, IEEE Fellow\n\nAgenda: \n6:00 PM - Free Pizza and dr
inks (People are requested to come by 6:00 PM and not later than 6:30 PM)\
n\n6:30 PM to 8:30 PM - Talks by Paul and Bob\n\nRoom: Library\, Bldg: Bel
