DESCRIPTION:IEEE Power & Energy Society Vancouver Chapter is pleased to ann
ounce a distinguished lecture on "Practical Power Flow Controller Brings B
enefits of Power Electronics to the Grid" by Dr. Kalyan K. Sen. The chapte
r kindly invites all PES members and guests to attend this presentation. P
lease also feel free to extend this invitation to those who you think woul
d be interested in this presentation.\n\nThis IEEE technical presentation
hours may be considered towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
credits.\n\nLecture Topic: Practical Power Flow Controller Brings Benefits
of Power Electronics to the Grid\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Kalyan K. Sen\n\nDate: M
onday\, August 26th 2019\n\nTime: 11:55 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\n\nVenue: Centre
 Room\, Auditorium - BC Hydro Edmonds Office\, 6911 Southpoint Drive\, Bur
naby\, B.C.\n\nWebsite: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/203465\n\nWebEx i
nformation cannot be posted here and will be sent by email to our mail lis
t as per updated IEEE rules. Please contact host for more details.\n\nSynp
osis of the talk:\n\nPower flow control techniques have been practiced\, f
rom using inductors\, capacitors\, transformers and load tap changers in t
he earlier days of electrical engineering to power electronics-based solut
ions in recent years. Even though the costs and complexities of the availa
ble solutions vary widely\, the basic underlying theory of power flow cont
rol is still the same as it always has been. The question is which solutio
n one should employ. The answer depends on knowing what the true need is.
The power industry’s pressing need for the most economical ways to trans
fer bulk power along a desired path may be met by building new transmissio
n lines\, which is a long and costly process. Alternately\, it may be quic
ker and cheaper to utilize the existing transmission lines more efficientl
y. The key is to identify the underutilized transmission lines and harness
their dormant capacity to increase the power flows to the lines’ therma
l limits.\n\nThe presentation is designed to provide the basic principles
of power flow control theory\, an overview of the most commonly used power
flow controllers\, and future trends. The presentation will be of particu
lar interest to all utility power engineering professionals. The required
background is an equivalent of an Electrical Engineering degree with famil
iarity in power engineering terminology. The audience will hear from an ex
pert who actually designed and commissioned a number of power electronics-
based FACTS controllers since its inception in the 1990s.\n\nCentre Room\,
